Which Carpet Cleaning Method is Better?
There are a number of reasons to have a carpet. These reasons range from objective reasons such as beautification to practical reasons such as ergonomics, safety, and insulation.
Carpets can have various sizes, shapes, colors, materials, and the list goes on. One thing they all have in common, however, is that eventually, they all need to be cleaned.
After you have come to the conclusion that it is time to clean your carpet, there arises a set of decisions to be made. What detergent should be used? Should I use a machine or is hand washing adequate? Should I purchase or rent a machine? Which machine? Should I do it myself or let the professionals handle it? Should the carpet be dry cleaned or steam cleaned? What’s the difference?
That’s what we’re going to be focused on today; the differences between dry carpet cleaning and steam carpet cleaning.
What is dry carpet cleaning?
Dry carpet cleaning can be somewhat of a misleading name. This is because most dry carpet cleaning methods require some amount of liquid: be it detergent or water. Dry carpet cleaning can be divided into “no moisture” and very low moisture systems”.
Dry carpet cleaning is usually used on more delicate carpets, in areas where water is prohibited or whenever the carpeted is needed to be used immediately afterward.
During a typical dry carpet cleaning operation, the detergent is applied to the carpet and allowed to react with and loosen the contaminants in the carpet. Some types of detergent include dry compounds, polymers, and solvents. Some detergents require water to be sprayed onto them to activate the reaction with the contaminants. The detergent and soil mixture is then removed from the carpet by vacuuming, bonnet pad, etc., leaving you with a clean, dry carpet. There may, however, be some residue remaining in the carpet as it is usually impossible to remove all the detergent.
Because of technological advancements in dry cleaning technology, dry carpet cleaning is becoming ever more popular daily.
Advantages and disadvantages of dry carpet cleaning
|Pros of dry carpet cleaning||Cons of dry carpet cleaning|
|Little to no drying time required Relatively fast job completion time Safe for use on delicate materials||Leaves some detergent residue in your carpet Usually ineffective for deep-seated stains May require extra precaution due to harsh detergents|
What is steam carpet cleaning?
The steam seen during the steam carpet cleaning method is as a result of the hot water being used to clean the carpet. The steam is not a necessity and doesn’t actually assist with the cleaning method. The hot water extraction process is the term used to describe the process by which the steam cleaning method works.
During steam carpet cleaning, a steam carpet cleaning machine either produces or is supplied with hot water. This hot water is mixed with detergent and sprayed onto and into the carpet fibers. This loosens dirt, stains, and grease within the carpet. This hot mixture is then sucked out right after by a vacuum which is usually on the same machine.
This method leaves your carpet clean but it will require a couple of hours of drying time. This time can vary greatly due to the carpet material and the atmosphere around the carpet.
Advantages and disadvantages of steam carpet cleaning
|Pros of steam carpet cleaning||Cons of steam carpet cleaning|
|Effective at removing deep-seated stains No detergent residue left in the carpet Deep cleans and freshens your carpet in its entirety||May shrink or otherwise damage delicate material Requires about 5 hours drying time Relatively slow cleaning process Risk of microbial growth if carpet is not dried properly|
Should I steam clean or dry clean my carpet?
There has been a vast improvement in the dry carpet cleaning market due to technological advancements in the detergents and equipment used. Steam carpet cleaning is still, however, the more recommended method of cleaning.
This conclusion, however, is just a general synopsis and cannot be used to decide which procedure is better for your specific situation.
To guarantee the best results, it is recommended that you contact a professional carpet cleaning company. They will provide you the expertise necessary to decide on the best way forward to having your carpet looking, feeling and smelling as close to new as possible.
